Baseball tryouts were held Friday January 30th on the BA baseball field.  Forty students competed for three remaining spots on the varsity team. This season there will be 13 players on varsity, ten returning along with the three new members.  Tryouts consisted of running, arm strength, batting and fielding.

Senior Zach Chitwood was chosen as this year’s captain. Zack is optimistic about the upcoming season.

“Our goal is a district title,” he said.

This group of athletes is ready to get down and dirty and bring home a winning title.

“This team has the chemistry and dedication to go all the way to state,” said 3rd Baseman Eduardo De Luna, 11.

Head Coach Robert Allison, in his 7th year, believes this year’s team is prepared to win district and compete with the best teams in the area.

“The team is a much improved from last year’s,” he said. “They’re young, have the knowledge to play the sport and face the toughest teams in the district such as, Woodrow Wilson, Creekview, Newman Smith and Hillcrest."

The team will compete in two tournaments before district play begins. The Mesquite Tourney takes place on March 7 & 8 and the following week they will play in the Richardson Tournament.

District play begins on March 10 at BA against Newman Smith.

“They are one of the toughest teams we will face,” said Junior Sam Malone. “They have a couple of pitchers that are throwing 90 MPH fastballs.”
