English is Underrated

By: Jennifer Castaneda, 12

High school students in Texas are required to have two years of a foreign language class. A common complaint heard in the halls of BA is that it's unnecessary to take a foreign language class.

However, being bilingual can be very beneficial in the work place. Jobs like translators/interpreters, language teachers, tour guides, healthcare professionals, and government positions get paid 5 to 20% more than the usual amount that others get paid.

Furthermore when traveling or even with your family, knowing more than one language is beneficial because you will be able to communicate effectively with others that don't speak the same language.

Those who are open minded will learn to appreciate these beneficial opportunities of studying and working with foreign languages. Learning a new language is challenging for some people but for those that want to be successful and try with their all, it's worth it.
