The State Fair of Texas has come and gone for the 128th time. This year was advertised as being BIGGER and BETTER than ever.  Luckily DISD sets aside a fair day for all students and what’s even better is that a three day weekend is included.

People come from all over Texas to experience the “Big” thrills the State Fair has to offer. Even if you’re not Texan you can sure feel like one at the greatest State Fair of them all.

This years’ fair had many additions including a 30 by 50 foot Texas State flag flying proudly 120 feet in the air letting people know were proud to be a Texan. If you’re ready to dive into the history and “Heart of Texas” (this year’s theme) a great place to start is the Hall of State. It’s a building on the fairgrounds dedicated to the history and greatness of Texas.

People can enjoy petting zoos, the nightly parade and many assortments of Texas clothing, hats and jewelry. If that’s not enough you’d probably want to go check out the new car show and also the largest one in the entire southwest it’ll really get those eyes open along with the big Texas smile. Grandma might even school you on how to really get down on the floor...don’t worry it’s just square dancing.

The food. One can never forget the great food. Each year a competition is held for the most unusual new fried food to be sold at the fair. This year featured the Deep Fried Texas Bluebonnet by Isaac Rousso. It’s a blueberry muffin, scone-style batter that is stuffed with cream cheese, blueberries and sweet morsels of white chocolate. It is baked and deep fried to a perfect golden brown. It is topped off with whipped cream, chopped white chocolate morsels, powdered sugar, blueberries, and a delicious blueberry glaze.

Another is the Chicken Fried Loaded Baked Potato by Butch Benavides. This new treat is the creamy and moist insides of a baked potato, loaded with generous amounts of butter, bacon, and cheddar cheese. It is coated and battered with a delectable blend of spices and flour that create a perfect combination of fried crispy crust and delicious, creamy loaded baked potato. It is served with a ranch dipping sauce.

“The food was nice too; one of my favorites was the turkey leg. I prefer a lot of barbeque sauce and the funnel cake is also very good, sweet and moist. Naysa Custudio , 10th grade

The awesome rides the bigger the better People of all ages can enjoy the endless choices. Especially the rides really favored by some students like the “Hard Rock“ ride.

Although the State Fair has big thrills, there are some things you don’t want to experience. Like the exhaustingly long lines...waiting in parking lines, food lines, ride lines and one most disliked the restroom line… but in the end it’s worth it.
