Girl Talk is a new club at BA with 25 female members ranging from freshman to seniors. The club meets every Thursday in the lunchroom to discuss topics important to teenage girls. Girl Talk was created by Ms. Alexzandra Bryant, the coordinator of Communities in School at BA. Ms. Bryant started the program to provide girls at BA with a positive role model and someone that can relate to them.

"I want to be the person that they can look up to and say ‘If she did it so can I”, said Ms. Bryant.

Girl talk is designed to inspire and promote self-esteem, motivation, life skills, decision-making skills and inspire girls to further their education. During meetings members openly discuss these issues. Each girl feels comfortable to speak openly to their peers and the club sponsor.

Ms. Bryant provides the girls with a journal that allows them to record their feelings. After they write in their journal they give it to Ms. Bryant and she responds to them with encouragement and advice. The members understand that she is there for them and won’t judge them. The girls can also speak individually to Ms. Bryant when they need her to listen or simply need advice.

Girl Talk is a “girls only” club. Boys are not allowed in the program because Ms. Bryant wants the environment to be a safe place for girls to speak freely and comfortably. Things may change though. Teenage boys at BA also need a safe place to talk about their own concerns and it may happen.

“We are considering a similar club for boys to provide them with their own setting for honest discussion of topics important to them,” said Ms. Bryant.
