If the shoe fits - Rock It!
I don't have a shoe obsession. Well maybe.
By ALEXISl LOUIS, 12
Whenever I entered the mall that Saturday evening I had my mind set on purchasing a pair of those trendy boots every teenage girl seems to own. But, as I began my journey to find the perfect pair of boots, I got distracted by Kids Footlocker or Champs, two stores I’m extremely familiar with. The seemingly never-ending options of athletic shoe stores create this sense of obsession and I just couldn’t help myself from buying yet another pair of tennis shoes. I turned over and gave my mom (or any other unfortunate relative) the lip, a look I mastered over the years, and she can never resist letting me go in.
Though my parents don’t complain about my constantly growing shoe collection, the more I enter these athletic shoe stores, the more I notice other parents threatening “This is the LAST pair!” to their children. There’s always been a lot of controversy relating to the popularity of big brand athletic shoes (Jordan, Nikes, Adidas, etc.) because of their pricing, bullying of the less fortunate, and crime resulting from purchasing them.
My take on the topic is simple, if you can afford them then there shouldn’t be any issue with them buying it. I see these same parents that complain over the prices of shoes are wearing a brand new purse and some expensive sun glasses. I make this argument with my step mom all the time. As a working adult you wouldn’t settle for less when buying a new product so why should you child have to hear the “money doesn’t grow on trees” lecture when I want some new shoes. Anel Quesedo ’12 said “If you have a job or your parents can afford them then it shouldn’t be a problem.” Leslie Martinez ’12 said “Your behavior and economic situation should be the deciding factors on if o if not you can get a new pair of shoes.” Both of these statements prove my point exactly, if you can afford them then it shouldn’t be a problem.
