During the State of the Union Address President Obama proposed a government program to cover student’s tuition for qualifying college programs for two years. Students would be required to maintain a GPA of 2.5. Part-time students would also be covered which is significant since 60 percent of students already are part-time.

“I want to lower the cost of community college to zero,” said Obama.

According to the College Board the national tuition cost is on average $3,347. The proposal says that the federal government would cover 75 percent of the average cost and the states would pick up the rest.

Many BA graduates attend community colleges like Eastfield and Richland. These students could benefit from Obama's plan.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for those who deserve a higher education but can’t afford it,” said senior Yizhell Flores.

Some critics think the GPA requirement for the plan is too low and it will be money wasted on “undeserving students”. Community College is sought as a fresh start for students who might not have done so well in High School. Going to community college and then transferring to a 4-year college is also a reason any attend them first.

Politically it may be difficult for President Obama to see his program pass.

“It is a great idea but I don’t think it’s going to pass since we have a Democratic President and a Republican Congress,” said BA government teacher  Bryan Marotto.

The plan could cause taxes to go up as well, increasing opposition.

President Obama believes this is a way for the lower class to not be left behind and that furthering your education after High school is not impossible.

"Passing this plan would be an investment to a greater future," he said.
