Once Upon a Mattress

                      BY: LIZBETH ORTIZ

On March 2-4, the theatre department put on a well attended musical, Once Upon a Mattress. The story of the princess and the pea through his eyes.

The prince, played by Adam Garcia needed to find a real princess to marry. He couldn’t have just any princess, but someone who can pass the test.

If the Prince wasn’t married then nobody else in the kingdom couldn’t either. Sir Harry, played by Brandon Rivera, and Lady Larken, played by Lesley Ortega, were expecting a baby, so they needed the prince to get married stat, or else lady Larken has to run away.

Sir Harry goes off to find a princess. Sir Harry finds the princess, played by Victoria Velasco, and brought her to the kingdom, but sadly Queen Aggravain, played by Katie Alvarado, disapproves of her because she wasn’t fit to be a princess nor to be married to her son, the prince. The queen and wizard, played by Susset Tamayo, planned a scheme to show how the princess isn’t a real princess, by placing a pea under many, many mattresses. If the princess has a great slumber, then she wasn’t truly a princess.

Adding more to the plan they put a lot of potions to help her sleep great. After that night, the princess couldn’t stand sleeping because it just wasn’t comfortable.

In the end, the princess passed the test, and Sir Harry and Lady Larken could get married.

The cast seemed to hit a few bumps on the road due to assigning new cast members.“There was a Long process, we needed to work together to overcome the obstacles.” –Susset Tamayo, the wizard.

one of the obsticals hit by understudies were delays on costumes and makeup to make the musical successful. After all of the difficulties, which happened last minute, they worked hard to make the performance successful and with a time limit. “Cast was flexible and hard working” –Victoria Velasco, Princess.

Humberto Ortiz, the jester, said “cast is fun and inviting.” The cast, tech crew, and band combined forces to make this musical phenomenal. It was a long process for them to work together, because each group had an important part for the musical, such as the music and vocals, tech crew helped with the lighting and microphones, each stayed 2 or 3 hours rehearsing and practicing their part.

As my personal opinion the musical was intriguing and capturing. I enjoyed all of the actors bring their characters to life on stage through their lines and how they interpreted and presented them.
