Coach Marcus Garrett, the Court Systems and Practices teacher, has created a new learning environment for his students in the form of a court room. Mysteriously, the location of the court room is not generally known.

“I don’t want anyone to know about it just yet because it’s not finished. I’m still missing the chairs,” Garrett said

A once empty room is now filled with new furniture that makes up BA’s first mock court room. Garrett is still in the process of purchasing the chairs for the court room. This new addition is the going to highlight Garrets classes dealing law and court systems.

The students will be able to use the space to practice the process of a court room trial. The venue is complete with a Judges’ bench, witness stand, jury box and tables for the defense and prosecuting attorneys. It also includes a place for the court reporter (clerk) as well as a visitor’s gallery. Garrett decided to put the court room together when he started sponsoring the BA Mock Trial team.

Now his classes will be able to experience an actual court room feel. Garrett believes that his classes work better in the court room environment.

“I notice my students learn more about the court when we’re in the court room setting,” he said

Garrett’s mock trial team goes to several competitions and workshops. This prestigious team is open to any student who is interested in law. The team practices several times a week and some weekends. The Mock trial team has begun practicing and preparing for competition. If you are interested in joining the team go by Mr. Garret’s portable, 7B, located just outside the cafeteria.

Garret is a UNT graduate. He majored in criminal justice and minored in psychology. Before coming to BA he worked at the Dallas County Juvenile Court, Volunteers of America (VOA) Halfway House, a rehabilitation center for federal offenders, and Denton County Juvenile Court.
