Student’s most common problem is having to deal with peer pressure during this time. At home, outdoors or even at school. Peer pressure is when you feel you 'have to' do something that you might not usually choose to do. It is when you choose to do this to fit in, or 'be cool', amongst your peers. Teens usually get the bad habits from whom they socialize.
“It sucks, because everybody nowadays wants to fit in with their friends, and it makes it hard for the people to be individuals.” Said Aisha Robertson 12.
The intensity of peer pressure differs from situation to situation. Some examples of negative peer pressures are doing drugs, smoking, drinking alcohol, stealing, skipping school, etc. But sometimes it’s not always about being in the wrong crowd but also having to deal with school. Being in school activities, following rules, a lot of homework or trying to get into college.
“I think peer pressure is wrong because it can sometimes lead to bad stuff. I haven’t dealt with negative peer pressure only positive.” Said Kelly Corzo 10
These types of pressures often lead to bullying or depression or leads to severe consequences like getting addicted and damaging your body. But of course there are ways to overcome them due to positive peer pressure—when friends influence you make the right choices. This type of pressure can lead to great things like new found talents, good grades, new friends, and a positive attitude. Ways to not deal with the negative peer pressure is by saying “no” with a positive statement, by walking away, look for positive role models and just simply get away from the pressure zone.
“No such thing as peer pressure, it’s your own decision, people would try to get me into doing things, but I didn’t do it.” Said Alexis Trejo
Although the negative influence of peers is often over-emphasized, more can be done to help teenagers develop positive peer relationships, and deflect negative peer pressures and influences. It can help a lot by going to a family member or a counselor for advice. Seek support and get help.
