Shadow Day at BA

                     BY: MARTHA LOZA

On March 4, 2016, at 8:00 am sixty five students arrived from Gaston and Hill to visit our campus. They were thirty one students from W.H. Gaston Middle School and thirty four students from Robert T. Hill Middle School. The students wanted to get a view of the campus.

The students were elected by their AVID teachers. They had to be interested in being in AVID for their upcoming year and had to tell their AVID teacher that they wanted to be part of this day.

Their shadow mentors were freshman through senior students.

In the morning, the students had a photo scavenger hunt around the school with their shadow mentors. The students walked with their shadow mentors during fifth and sixth period. The students and their mentors met in the library during seventh period. Mr. Kastl and some of the shadow mentors talked to the middle school students in the library.

All of the shadows left with a positive view of BA. Some of them even exchanged snapchats with their shadow mentors. Some of the students changed their mind about going to either Townview or another high school and have now decided to come to BA.

Erick Perez, a student from Gaston said, “I really loved the classes and loved shadow day.”

“ My shadow was cool. He participated in the classes that we went together to. He told me that he plays soccer and that he wants to become a mechanical engineer. He really wants to come to BA,” Oscar Torres, 12 grade said.

“At first I was scared because it was my first time being a shadow mentor. I knew I had to be stronger and put myself on my shadow's shoes. My shadow was cool and energetic. She told me she was coming to BA for sure. She would asked questions during the class discussions,” Nancy Barajas, 11 grade, said.

“My shadow, Daisy, was a good shadow, thanks to her, I won’t feel like a fish out of water. I can’t wait to be part of the BA family,” Yareth Cabrera from Hill said.

Maya Hernandez from Robert T. Hill said that Bryan Adams seems to be a really good high school and that her mentor and her mentors friends made her feel comfortable. They did not exclude her from their conversations. She also said that her mentor, gave her good details about BA.

Overall, the shadows had a great impression of BA. Most of the shadows, want to come to BA, because their shadow mentors treated them good and showed them the best qualities of BA.
