On Thursday afternoon, October 2nd, heavy storms rolled through North Texas knocking out the power to thousands of homes and businesses, including BA. The heavy rain and wind caused destruction and flooding. On Friday morning parents got a phone call from the DISD announcing that some of the schools were closed because there was no electricity.

At the end of school on Thursday just as the bell rang, the skies started looking pitch black. The wind started to pick up blowing up to 50 miles per hour. The rain arrived and started pouring down as the students rushed to their rides. Anyone caught outside got soaking wet. Then the lights starting going off and on.

Over the next few hours things did not improve.

“My lights were out the whole day. I turned on flashlights and had to do my homework in the dark. In fact, my food even spoiled,” said Ramon Cruz, 12.

It was a big struggle for some of the students at BA not having electricity because the lights didn’t come back on till the following day in the afternoon.

“The lights were out for like 9 hours. We had to go to Walmart to buy candles, but when we got there they had already ran out,” said Joselyn Romero, 12, “It was a struggle for me to look for my stuff for school the next day. I had to carry a candle with me everywhere I went and I also had to take a cold shower.”

A lot of activities were interrupted by the storm, such as athletic events, club meetings and administrative meetings.

“I was in a parent conference and we had to cut it short because the power kept going on and off,” said Assistant Principal Stephanie Burns.

By the start of school Friday power was restored to BA. Many schools and homes were without electricity for up to 3 days.
