The Dallas Mayors Intern Fellows Program

Dallas ISD students work real world jobs

Last summer I participated in an internship with Red Capital Group, a financial services company, as part of the Mayor's Intern Fellows Program. At Red Capital I learned many things that a public school system could never teach me. I worked with many adults that gave me advice about money and college. I was even honored to meet the CEO of Red Capital Group of Dallas.

The Dallas Mayors Internship is a wonderful organization that helps many students intern at corporate jobs. It is easy for students to apply (see below).  The application process is online and once a student has applied they must register for a training session.

After a student receives a call back they attend a job fair to be interviewed by companies that sponsor the Mayors Internship such as The Dallas Public Library, Dallas Arboretum and The Texas Food Bank.

If a student gets the job like I did they will meet many important people. When I met the CEO of Red Capital Group in Dallas he was nothing like I expected him to be. He is a dad, an average Joe, except with a important title. He shared with us some of his own personal experiences but seemed more fascinated with us than we were of him. He would ask us silly questions about school since his daughter was entering high school soon and was concerned about her experience there.

Besides meeting successful professionals I also worked with other interns. Students from all over Dallas ISD, each very talented and intelligent. They taught me to be very humble. Even though I was from BA, there were students from the Townview and other schools. We all saw each other as equal. I never came across any attitude among the interns.

It was such a pleasant experience. I learned a lot, not only work etiquette, but also how the real world works. I see now how much competition there is out there. It really opened my eyes. More students at Bryan Adams should participate and learn about the opportunities available through the Majors inter Program.
